We had our first SEO session back in 2011 which brought overwhelming success when numerous successful SEO brains joined us and had an exchange of opinions and knowledge about SEO and social media. SEO or commonly known as Search Engine Optimization has grown dramatically over the years and so have our roles as professionals, it has become vital for us to stay well informed about the rapidly growing SEO related researches, tactics and techniques in order to provide quality services to our clients.

In the past few months Google has almost changed the basic grounds for SEOs in other words, the strategies that worked earlier are simply out of fashion now.

In that case, I feel an utter need of a workshop/gathering through which we can put some light over these new modus operandi and strategies facilitating ourselves with each other’s knowledge.

What’s the Plan!

The workshop would be a platform for all the SEO professionals and Digital marketing Agency owners to gather under one roof and converse the current trends of the industry, discussing the hot happenings surrounding our field followed by a question answer session for everyone to get their queries resolved.

Let me share a little about what’s on my mind, I plan a one day workshop where professionals get a chance to update themselves about the latest techniques and get a fair idea regarding what should be their new line of practise plus the old strategies they should discard.

The complete plan is as follows!

Introduction to Modern SEO

Local Industry related problems and Possible solutions

Presentation – How I find and build links!

Q and A session

Refreshment Break!

AMA (Ask Me Anything) session

Actionable Tips for SEOs and Bloggers

Who should join?

This workshop promises good amount of information for bloggers under any niche. It will help them to get a fair idea on how to drive a handsome amount of traffic to their blogs, what plug-ins they should use for best SEO practices and much more.

The question answer and ask me anything sessions would be best for them as they can get their queries solved by high ranked professionals and consult me further in case of any trouble.

Link Building is very difficult to scale mainly because the only limit to link building is your creativity. You can always come up with innovative ideas, new resources and fresh ways to grab a link that points back to your website. This is all true, but you should still have a first-hand guide to get started.

Usually, when normal searchers go to search engines they search for the term they are looking for to get results against the query. After the results there are only two options, either they find the resource that they are looking for or they will try a new query to find the best possible results that fit their needs.

As a link builder you need to go beyond the normal search and move towards something advance that allows you to get more precise results and better link grabbing opportunities… so how exactly will you do that?

Mostly, when I start any link building project, I try to find good and quality directories that are very much relevant to my client’s industry!

Note: There are tons and tons of advance search operators but I have discussed only the ones that are simple yet effective!

Finding Quality and Relevant Directories

To find quality directories, here are some of the quick search operators that I normally use!

travel * directory

intitle:directory “travel”

inurl:directory “travel”

“favorite links” travel

“favorite sites” travel

The search quires mentioned above might not offer you tons of resources, but you probably will find quality links initially. However, this is not the point to stop, there are some more advance search operators that might prove to be good resources for you.

travel “add url”

travel “add site”

travel “add your site”

travel “submit url”

travel “submit site”

travel “submit your site”

travel “submit * url”

Note: There is a lot of mess available on the internet, especially when you are finding directories, these search operators might offer a good number of resources (directories), where you can add your link, but you always have to keep your quality meter on and eliminate the ones that are not meeting your quality standards.

Moving from directories, the next step is to find relevant and quality blogs and forums. I would, however, like to mention that I do not use blogs and forums anymore for link building, but most of the times blogs and forums allow you to build your initial reputation in the niche. You can use them as an intermediary between your website and the blog/forum, and allow substantial amount of referral traffic to move towards your website and possibly convert in to customers. I, personally, have witnessed a good amount of conversion through forum participation.

Finding Blogs and Forums using search operators

I, usually, use forums and blogs to understand the current trends in one particular niche, gather ideas about content to be presented, identify the problems that people in the industry are facing and assemble other relevant material and statistics. So, my major focus is to grab the gist of the discussions on blogs and forums that contain good amount of activity and interaction.

Here are few of the common advance search operators that I use to grab quality blogs and forums in any niche.

intitle:travel forum

inurl:travel forum

intitle:travel blog

inurl:travel blog

Finding the Guest Blogging Opportunities

You should now move forward towards Guest Blogging. Many have different opinions about guest writing opportunities, some find it toxic while others still find it a good way to grab quality links that pointback to your website. I am one of the believers of the latter mind set, I truly believe that this tactic in itself is very useful and convenient; it’s just that many people in the industry are abusing it and this is why Google and other search engines are keeping a close eye at this.

Anyway, if you are in to guest blogging for a bit of time, you probably know that there are tools like link prospector and myblogguest.com community, that can really help you with guest blogging, but I find using search operators more effective and beneficial rather than using the said tools!

Here are few of the search operators that I use to find guest blogging opportunities:

travel “guest post”

travel “write for us”

travel “guest writer”

travel “guest blogger wanted”

travel “become a contributor”

travel “guest blog” + inanchor:contact

There are many other formats that can be used to look for guest blogging opportunities, but these are the most simple and effective ones that anybody can remember!

Finding Review Websites

Before you think about moving to tactics like link sleuthing and 404 link building, where you will need tools like screaming frog, broken link checker, broken link builder and more, you should focus on getting reviews. This will not only offer you a link, but also help you increase your conversions online, especially if you are in the ecommerce industry.

Here are the search operators that will allow you to get access to the websites that allow paid reviews to different products.

travel intext:”this is a sponsored post”

travel intext:”this is a Sponsored review”

travel inurl:”this is a sponsored post”

travel inurl:”this is a sponsored review”

If you decide to use these advanced search operators, you probably will give a good start to your link building campaign and in the next phase, you can move towards advance link building tactics where you will need tools like Broken Link Building, Outdated Content Finder and the like.

Good luck with your next link building project!

22nd May was a black Wednesday for online businesses. Many of them completely disappeared from search engine where others lost almost half of their search engine traffic. Google’s sky was dark and it was heavily raining, when Penguin 2.0 (a.k.a Penguin 4) came out for the kill.

Penguin 2.0 has hit almost 2.3% of the English search and around 80.7°F has been recorded as Google’s temperature by MozCast after this rollout, indicating radical changes in SERP results. The major purpose of this roll out was to eliminate the low quality content and websites that contain a bad linking neighborhood and to give preference to the websites and contacts that REAL people are more likely to share within their circles.

AM I a Penguin 2.0 victim?

If your website’s search traffic dropped miserably after/on May 22nd and you are no longer ranking for your money making key phrases, then probably you have become food for Google’s penguin2.0 and that is mainly because your link profile was not able to impress Google enough to acquire a good spot in its SERPS.

Dish.com and Home24.de are the prominent victims of penguin 2.0, you may check their link to have a good idea of what should be avoided while building links for your website. To be more precise usually Spammy Links, Paid Links, Networked blogs, low quality links, links from websites that contain bad neighbourhood are website that you should avoid while creating your link profile as these can remove you from the good books of Google penguin and can make you suffer.

Jesus, what’s next?

If you are outsourcing your link building efforts or you have a team in-house, immediately order them to stop all such efforts. This may lead to taking some hard steps on your side which may include firing the current personnel and hiring a new SEO company that can work for you or encourage your people to take some modern link building trainings, seminars or may be attend some 2013 SEO and digital marketing conferences.

The Recovery Plan!

The damage has been made but it’s never too late to start driving on the right lane and get back your rankings, traffic and conversions for your business. The journey may be difficult but you will defiantly be going to get greater returns in the longer run!

Here is the ideal recovery plan that can help you get the desired results.

Manually Remove Low quality and bad links from your profile

The idea is to get in to your profile, uncover the bad links, find the webmasters of those websites and send a request for link removal.

You can get the link profile from Majestic SEO and then get in to the link profile to separate the low quality/bad links from the list. If this sounds like a lot of manual work then you may take assistance of a software program that can help you with the process! Some of the good softwares I know are Link Risk and Remove Me.

Now, that you have the list of links that are unhealthy for your business website, the next step is to find their webmaster’s emails or other contact details that you can find from their websites, or Whois Data. Send emails to request a link removal.

I usually use different templates for Link Removal request but somehow this works really well!

Hello Webmaster Name,

I am a webmaster from website URL and these days I am working on our link profile to have an idea of where we are getting a link from mainly because of the Google new policies and their penalties to websites that contain bad link profile.

We set some internal criteria for a link and unfortunately your website didn’t fall under that. This doesn’t meanthat you are not following Google’s guidelines but we want to be on the safe side.

So, I would love if you can remove our link that is available on following URL Link. Our link is URL.

I would be happy if you could do that!

Looking forward to hear from you!

Regards,

Name

Record all the responses in a Google Docs spread sheet to observe how many links has been removed and how many people responded to your emails and other details.

Once done, you can move towards link disavow tool through which you will tell Google what links you think are harming your website and you want Google to discount juice coming from those websites. If you want to know the details of how to use a disavow tool then this post by Danny Sullivan will help!

Stop Building Links

Not literally, but you really need to change the way you were building links and focus on epic content marketing that allow you to attract links naturally.

Here are the changes you should adopt and consider as important when building links in the post-penguin 2.0 world!

Links within the content

Usually content gets most of the attention by the people; also, Google finds relevancy of any page after analysing the content. The idea is to get links from within the content so that real people can relate to it.

You can do this by creating impressive content so that people can relate to it naturally, also this can be attained by guest blogging on different quality websites.

Author Tag

In the start of 2013,Gaz Copland compiled a Post about the Future of SEO in 2013 and I forecasted Author tag to be very important and it seems true especially after the launch of penguin 2.0.

Try to include author tag on your website and where ever you are writing as a columnist or as a guest writer. The idea is to add your author tag and to build the author’s credibility.

Varied Anchor text

One of the major lessons from Penguin 1.0 was not to use exact match anchor text and use variety of anchor text that may or may not be your keyword.

The idea is to build links mainly with your brand name as it looks natural and then from variety of different key phrases that revolve around the keyword.

Co-Occurrence

It’s been a long time since Google started using phrase based indexing so co-occurrence can really help you get better visibility from your desired In order to stay safe from the next Google update the idea is to do monthly audits and check the health of your website and see if there are any low quality and bad links that are pointing to your website and in case there are any, try practicing the link removal idea again.

There are obviously more ways to get links and increase online visibility but above mentioned are some of the necessary ones.

Monthly Link Audits

Google Updates are not really going to stop and it will continue to tighten the space for low quality / spam content which automatically will give further boost to quality and relevant content against a query.

Try to build as quality content as possible and attract links instead of grabbing or buying one!

So, you have a twitter account for your business and you are spending good amount of hours on it tweeting but still your twitter account looks something like this:

And you wish your account to look something like this!

If this is the case then let me assure you that this post is defiantly going to help you improve your twitter life and you will be able to perform better on twitter. Obviously getting tons and tons of REAL followers over a night is next to impossible but you will see a gradual increase in your REAL followers that engage with you.

What is the Problem?

To fix anything it is very important to diagnose the problem first! There can be multiple reasons why people are not attractive in your twitter world.

1. Capturing Wrong Audience

Now you know what wrong audience exactly means! Getting attention of larger audience means very less if it is not the right kind of audience. If your audience is not engaging, they donot RT or favourite your tweets also if your un-following ratio is high then you should seriously reconsider your strategy to determine if you are catering the right audience or not.

2. One way Broadcasting Channel

If you have been active on twitter but somehow people are not interacting with you then it is probably better to knit your eye brows on this. One of the basic reasons for having dead audience around you is single sided conversation. If you are using twitter as one way broadcasting channel, then your twitter and the time consumed on it can actually do nothing for you or your brand.

3. Bad Timing

With bad timing I don’t mean bad luck but instead I am referring to the time that you mostly tweet. Like outreaching you should be vigilant about the time zone of your targeted audience and interact with your audience accordingly. For instance there is almost 10 to 12 hours difference between my targeted audience and my time zone so I work and interact with them accordingly.

It’s better to experiment first and try tweeting at different timings to reconfirm if this is the problem why your twitter account is not that twittering.

4. Playing like a BOSS

Usually start-ups and even some stable businesses make this mistake and that is to act like a BOSS on social media. Check your twitter account and see if you are responding to audience’s questions, suggestions and quires… If not, no wonder why your twitter account stinks!

You diagnosed the problem, Now What?

As we have identified the problem, it’s a fix it time!

Here are the following things that you can do to bring spring in your twitter life.

1. Follower Wonk

It is very important to follow and interact with your followers at step one or else it will be useless to spend hours talking and building connections with people who have no interest in you or services you offer.

Follower Wonk can be a great start to find the targeted audience and likeminded people on twitter. Simply type in your keyword and location to find out crowd of people having similar interests like yours!

Next step is to follow them and build relationships. Communication will help you to gather a wider audience around you that will eventually help promote your business.

2. Email

At times knowing about your targeted audience and communicating with them on social is just not enough especially if you want to build relationships with industry pundits and thought leaders.

The idea is to email them and share your thoughts about a subject, communicate through email and then interact with them on social. This way you will be able to create a powerful relationship, moreover, such communication will not only help you seek attention of thought leaders but even their followers!

3. Buffer App

If you are not living in a country where your targeted audience is, in that case buffer app is superb and mind blowing to stay in touch with your followers and make them feel that you are available.

Buffer app allows you to schedule your tweet this way you can keep your twitter active even while you are away. When you will be active in the peak hours you will receive more mentions, tweets and RTs which will help you make connections as well as increase number of followers over the period of time.

4. Be Real

Twitter is all about being real! The idea is to be generous to your followers and act smartly. For instance, saying thanks to the new followers, people who mention you in their tweets and even to those who RT you, will show your courteous nature and will encourage them to communicate with you.

Personal Experience!

It is practice that makes you perfect and everyone needs to learn from their mistakes in order to grow. I have been using the above mentioned techniques religiously over the last few month and here is my klout score of the last 90 days!

If you notice my klout score has moved from 44.98 to 56.44.

My advice would be to integrate the above ideas in your day to day twitter life and get a chance to improve, optimize and enhance your twitter life.

Information is great no matter what medium you are using to deliver it to your audience. It is usually loved by people but somehow if you are living in a space where there are heaps of existing channels to provide information in that case one needs to think out of the box in order to look different and attract wider yet targeted audience.

Content producers when working with an objective to look different from others in the similar niche usually take help of visualizations to display their info via graphics which is popularly known as infographics.

The main reason why content producers prefer infographics is because they are appealing and let the targeted audience to easily digest complex information like data, stats and other.

Link from Infographic may discount

Matt Cutts to Eric Enge:

“This is similar to what people do with widgets as you and I have talked about in the past. I would not be surprised if at some point in the future we did not start to discount these infographic-type links to a degree. The link is often embedded in the infographic in a way that people don’t realize, vs. a true endorsement of your site.”

Read the words by Matt carefully… he probably have a problem with how people are using infographics to grab links but if you use it the right way you can still get most out of infographic in terms of links, branding and traffic. I am not going to cover the complete topic of how to go right with infographics in term of link building but here are some quick pointers for you!

What you shouldn’t do with infographics

Do not place the embedded code under your infographics! When people share your image with an embedded code you get a link with the same repetitive anchor text and this is where Google starts to get a questionable signal.

What you should be doing with Infographics

Here are the following things you should consider while using infographics as a part of your online marketing strategy:

Include important and valuable information in it so that people find it helpful and naturally share and link to it.

Try to get links with infographics using different tactics like guest blogging, infographic directories, broken link building, blog commenting and may be more…

Create and execute a proper social media plan so that targeted audience can come across your desired page and engage through it, at the same time your website will achieve a powerful social value.

So, now you know how to use infographic and how one can get most out of it. But first your infographic should be strong from both aspect that is content, which includes finding resourceful information (data, stats, more..), and design that have appealing visuals.

So, where to find information/data?

How to find data for infographics?

This is tough especially when you are working for client’s industry that can be parenting, law or may be music and photography. Obviously one way of gathering data is by performing surveys and create infographic on basis of the available data.

The idea above is awesome but it might take too much of your time and obviously your client will never be that patient nor he will wait for that long because at the end of the day he is most concerned about his business sales.

Here are few of the websites that can give you access to open data that includes DATA.gov, Google Public Data, Flowing data, Data UK and more (let me know if you know any other, in the comment section below)…

Now when you know where to get data for infographics …

The next part is how to design/develop an infographic?

There are two ways you can get a great looking custom infographic that you can use for your (or your client’s) website in order to increase and enhance traffic, cater wider audience, links and reputation.

Hire a designer either on some freelance website or outsource to some other design company, pass them your research and a design idea. In some time you will have your final version of infographics ready to rock! This usually cost around $300 to $400 depending on the quality of design and the expertise of the designer.

The other way is a hard way! The idea is to save money on design and create infographic by yourself!

You are not a Designer!

No Problem! Neither am I!

I recently design this infographic that discusses the SEO process we follow for our clients at SEtalks.com. I will not say it’s remarkable but it is professional and appealing to someone who is interested in knowing our work process.

As I mentioned above I am not a designer so you might be thinking how come I made this infographic all by myself? Actually I tried some websites that allow free designing of infographics while using their templates.

I used Pikto chart as my idea was to exhibit the process step by step but if you hold data and other similar kind of visualization with you then probably you should not use this and better go for Infogr.am or tableau.

Actually there are multiple websites that allow you to design infographics for free but every website has a certain domain where it is stronger than others.

If your infogrpahic design is inclined towards charts and tables then tableau is ideal for you as it is much powerful for tabular visualization. The tool is not web based so in order to use this software you will need to download and run it on your local computer.

If you are planning to create an infographic that is more focused on images with a mix of a text then your ideal choice should be PiktoChart.

If you are on very basic level and want to create some quick infographics about your social profiles like twitter, linkedin and more so visual.ly is pretty simple and a good choice for this purpose.

If your target market are people who love loads of data as their breakfast then you should try datavisualization.ch. It this allows you to create really geeky infographics that is usually loved by the geeky audience.

You can simply create an account on one of these websites and use drag and drop option to create a sensible, good looking yet attractive infographic for your audience.

JOB done!

Not really, Yes you have your infographic ready but before you even think of clicking the publish button, I would highly recommend you to reconsider your marketing plan or else all your efforts from research till designing might go in the bin!

Infographic Marketing Plan:

A good executable marketing plan is very important if you want your infographic to go viral and bring you leads, traffic, and links. Here are a few things you can do to attract more eye balls.

Write a Press Release about it!

Write an SEO optimized press release in which you may tell your story about how you researched to get the data, moreover what you exactly learned from it. Usually press releases on websites like PR web, News wire and PR lead get syndicated on big news websites like yahoo news, Google news and more so there are more chances to cater more and more eye balls.

Paid Social Promotion

Paid social promotion is great and if you are good at targeting the right kind of people it can really help you go BIG. The idea is to promote your infographic on facebook and try to target right kind of people from desired locations.

Infographic Directories

This is an easy part! Try to find as many infographic directories like visual.ly, daily infographic, cool infographic and more where you can submit your press release. They will review and make it live on their websites.

Guest Blogging

Write creative blog posts around your infographic and submit on some related blogs so that you can drive the traffic from that blog to your infographic page.

Manual Outreach

Try to contact bloggers, people you know, journalist and offer them to re-use it for free, share reviews about the infographic . You may even ask them to share it on social media platforms and as their reach is wider than yours, chances are you will get more eye balls then you have thought.

Now you are all set to research, create and market infographic to grow your business online! So what you are waiting for. Happy infographing

If you are a small or mid size business planning to grow your business in the organic world, you probably would have given a good amount of your marketing budget to search engine optimization a.k.a SEO. Apparently by now, you know the importance of SEO and how it can help your business grow and c more customers online.

The next job is to find an agency, consultant or in-house SEO that is right for your business but as SEO does not contain any certification, course, degree or anything authentic, it is incredibly difficult to find the right person to do that job!

Major Problem!

This digital marketing industry to be precise SEO is very effective and can offer amazing return on investment if you find the right person for the job but unfortunately there is huge crowd of people who have absolutely no knowledge about how it works but still they are busy selling the snake oil services to the businesses who are in need of online growth.

When businesses hire the wrong person to do the job, make the situation worse and instead of any online growth they usually face Google’s penguin and panda penalization.

The only way to escape from Google penalties and perform better in the online world is to find the right person for the job. Now the question is How to find the quality SEO for your business?

How to find the Quality SEO for my business?

There is no defined process or checklist for business about how to find the quality SEO resource but I will try to compile the step you should consider before contacting or hiring a quality consultant to fulfil your digital marketing needs.

1. Look for Confidence

SEO is a continuous changing industry so saying that there can be a person who will be able to answer every question of yours correctly is almost impossible. What you should really look in to a person is confidence and honesty; see how they are explaining the issue and coming up with solutions of it and does it making sense to you. The best advice in about finding a good SEO was given by Ian Lurie in one of his previous articles:

“Ability to really think a problem through. We ask some fairly tough questions. Some are those annoying giraffe-in-a-fridge variety ones, some are SEO-focused. I’m not looking for a ‘right’ answer.

I just want to see the thought process. Too often folks just shrug and say “I don’t know” or, even worse, they give a completely incorrect answer and then babble for 3 minutes.

I need someone who’ll say “I don’t know right now, but here’s how I’d figure it out.”

- Ian Lurie (@portentint)

I believe this the best way to find if this person can actually help you tackle your online marketing issues. Check if he is able to answer the question reasonably and logically or they get flustered and defensive by pointed questions?

2. Level of Transparency

There are multiple techniques in SEO that might lift up your website for a short period of time and once Google notice you, it will penalize you and the business will get buried forever.

When looking for a consultant, always ask him what strategies he is going to implement if he is going to work on your website. If the answer contains keywords like clocking, doorway pages, 1000+ directories, do follow blog commenting then you should consider moving to the next person in your list and if the answer is more like nice commenting, guest blogging, link baiting, local submission, media links then you are spending time with the right person. If you ask Cyrus Shepard, according to him before hiring a SEO you should check for his :

“Link building skills. And I mean creative, white-hat, scalable link building that doesn’t rely on paid directories and low value press releases.”

- Cyrus Shepard (@CyrusShepard)

3. Beware of Long Term Contracts

Usually SEO Contracts allow 30days and 60 days out so if the contracts ask to you stick with a company for long period of time even after notification or don’t include the clause of notifying a few days prior to opting out from the contract then this is the perfect time to consider other options.

4. Odd Pricing Model

The era of selling SEO services on number of keywords basis are gone. So if someone tells you that they are going to do SEO for 10 or 15 keywords then you should raise your eyebrows and move towards the other option that you have in your list.

These are the common things that you should consider while you are in a meeting with a consultant or a company but there are several things you can check on the internet before you are finalizing your decision.

5. Google Consultant/Business Name

SEO consultants are also known as internet marketers so it is quite logical that they will be having active profiles around the internet. The idea is to search their name on the internet and see how they are performing in the online world. Here is an example of two mastermind in the SEO industry:

If what you see appeals to you then it’s a good sign but if your observation puts you in confusion then it is advisable to take some more time and reconsider your decision.

6. Check twitter and Google+

Social is a part of complete digital marketing sphere so it is simply impossible that a consultant will not have an active twitter or Google+ profile or both.

The reason why you should look in to the social profile is because it will give you a hint of how he communicates to his friends and followers in the online world and this will give you a good idea about his knowledge that he posses and his attitude towards work in general.

Usually people don’t use facebook for professional reasons but twitter and/or Google+ are the right choice especially in the SEO niche like the above mentioned examples of some awesome peers of SEO industry.

7. Trace their activity on forums

This will tell you about two things. 1) How you react to people who are in need of some quick help 2) how knowledgeable that person is.

In the SEO industry the finest forums where interaction is great are Webmaster World, SEOmoz QnA, Quora and more like Barry or Gianluca who are always ready to help people through different forums.

If you see that the consultant have a positive image on discussion forums and QnA websites then you should give extra points but if they are not present at all or they have made no valuable contribution then you should better reconsider your decision.

8. Activity on Leading Blogs

This is not must but usually helpful and positive SEOs tend to write about tricks and tactics from time to time on other industry related blogs that includes blog like SEOmoz, Search Engine Journal, Daily SEO tips, Search Engine Land, Raven and more…

A little homework is always good. Research and see if they have their posts are live on any known SEO blogs, if yes, then this person definitely have a good insight of seo and can easily help you with your online marketing strategies. Don Rhoades and Sujan can be a great example in this regard.

9. Endorsements

This again is not a must but it can surely give an SEO some extra advantage over others. SEO industry is quite engaging and industry leaders are usually happy to pass recommendation for the people who have done something really interesting in the community or personally with them.

You can easily find out about such people (some one like Jason Acidre) by following other industry peers to see if they are talking about him in a positive way. It will make your job quite easier however, this is never fundamental.

I guess the points I have mentioned above are enough to find a quality SEO for your business, so next time when you are planning hire a SEO consultant or an agency try considering all these points and probably you will find the right gem for your business.

Digital marketing is getting more challenging with each passing day, and it is getting tougher for Australian Businesses to stay ahead of the market and earn bigger profits. Many businesses throughout Australia are investing in a variety of online marketing channels, with the aim of getting their target audience to visit their website and to then convert leads successfully.

Local SEO is one of the most credible, ethical techniques used by SEO companies and businesses alike. It enables SMB’s to gain better visibility in Google Maps and usually ensures that they appear on the first page of Google, when local search queries related to their keywords are performed.

Google Local is a perfect vehicle for local businesses in any country or city, as it allows businesses small, medium or corporate to get targeted and relevant traffic, resulting in quality lead generation, high conversions and brand awareness. This then translates into growth and profitability for your business and assures your success.

In a recent SEO Survey, at Search Engine Land, Local Search (SEO) has over 60% more effectiveness for generating leads/customers.

Let’s get back to our topic; I won’t go into details about basic Local SEO guidelines and how to implement these. If Local SEO is of interest to you, then you may like to read this post (How to do local SEO for your website in 5 Minutes) by Andrew Shotland.

I will assume that you are well versed in Local SEO, and know how to get your business listing submitted on basic Local citations like Google Maps.

However, if you have an Australian business, and are getting your head around the time consuming task of researching and submitting local listings to various other local websites including Yellow Pages and other Data Aggregators, then you have come to the right post on this website.

In my extensive research, I found heaps of detailed posts about Local Citations for businesses based in United States and United Kingdom, but there was a lack of a single comprehensive resource for Local Citations for Australian businesses.

This motivated me to compile a list that would be an Ultimate resource for Local Citations for Australian business. I would like to share this list with you so that you too can benefit from our research.

My goal in creating this post is so it can be used as a one-stop resource that contains the most recent and updated Local Citations that any Australian business, SEO companies, SEO Consultants can benefit from.

I would love to hear your feedback and experience with your Local Citation Submissions. Also, let me know if you find some interesting niche local citations that are missing from the list.

Previous week I started a thread on inbound.org where I asked the community about the top 3 areas of On-Page Optimization that every SEO should consider when looking at a website to fix its on-page issues.

Reason I started the threat is because I have encountered many people who do not really understand the real power of on-page optimization and think that they can win solely with link building or content marketing.

I was lucky enough to get many different replies from active community members. I thought to collect all the replies at one place so that readers of SETalks.com can get some benefit out of it.

Here are few of the important areas of on-page optimization that one should consider as important in the eye of Inbound Community.

Note: The order is not according to the importance of the specific area but according to the replies I got on the threat!.

1. URL

SEO Friendly URL or the URLs that can give user and search engine a sense about the page content. Even today, if you use some creepy CMS you will see URLs with lots and lots of special characters. The idea is to create SEO friendly URLs that contain real words instead of special characters so that search engine as well as users can easily read and understand it accordingly.

2. On-Page Content

There are many hypothesis and theories about content length, style and how targeted audience react to it but one thing that everybody agrees on is the quality of content. The idea is to create engaging and compiling content for the targeted audience so that they can relate to it and convert.

3. Site’s Speed

In the today’s digital world, people have limitless choices but very less time so if your website will be slow and take a decay to load then chances are that people will stumbled over your competitor’s website rather than waiting for your website to load.

In order to save users as well as gain search engine credibility, it is very important to have a perfect site speed or else chances are you will lose potential clients as well as search engine ranking positions.

4. Page Title

Take the old school SEO and then pick the modern world of SEO what never transformed is the importance of the title tag and this is because it tells visitors as well as search engine bots about what to expect on the page.

Page title has a limit of 70 characters so always keep the length in mind when crafting titles.

5. Rel Canonicals

Canonical tag is actually used for search engines to direct about to the original content of the page so that there could be no issue of duplication of content within or across the different websites.

This works best when you have an eCommerce store and you are trying to sell one product from different pages.

6. Redirections

Multiple types of redirections are used across a website for different purposes. If you are dealing with a website having lots of pages containing a 404 header status then in that case using 301 to targeted pages will be a perfect option but in some cases you should use 302 as the redirection is not permanent.

7. Internal Linking

Internal linking is one of the areas that are highly misunderstood by many people in the SEO world. Number of internal links and exact match anchor text doesn’t really matter what matters the most is how valuable they are for your targeted audience and how that link can help enhance user experience.

8. Quality Server

Quality Server for a website is very important because if you will go to any cheap and non promising server that have an issue with their uptime, chances are you will lose your search engine visibility as well as users who are willing to covert and give business to you using your website.

Usually it is good to go for a hosting company who have a good name and have given almost 100% of uptime. Try to take VPS hosting instead of a shared one in order to extra secure your business.

9. SEO friendly Design

It is important to have an SEO friendly design that includes everything from the usability, experience and code optimization. If your design is not according to the search engine standards or it is not engaging and appealing to the targeted audience you will probably lose your clients even after coming on to the website.

The idea is to have a search engine friendly design which is simple enough for users so that they can easily convert. This will also help you gain better search engine visibility.

10. Crawlability

This came right from my favourite personality in Mozplex. Jennifer Sable Lopez highly emphasize on crawlability of a website because whatever you are going to do on the website, all of it will mean nothing if your website is not crawlable by search engine and thus all your efforts will be flush down in to gutter.

The idea is to make your sites crawable before implementing any other strategy on the website.

Above are few of the recommendations from the inbound community, if you have anything important to say or you are facing any problem in your on-page optimization just write down in the comment section and I will try to reply to it accordingly.

SEO gained popularity when business owners realized that serious buyers in the online world use search engines like Google to search for their needs and usually select and buy from the websites they see on the first page of Google.

In the early days it was so easy for a website to manipulate Google and get to the first page of Google with the desired key phrases but with the time Google continued to get better and smatter and in 2012 Google took some BIG and bold changes to hammer down all manipulative techniques and allow the ethical and relevant people to rule the first page from their targeted key phrases.

Today BIG brands are killing smaller brands by acquiring all the money making keywords in search engine and at the same time Google give hard time to businesses by launching animal named updates that miserably affect small and mid size businesses, it is smarter to think about the future and thinking about a platform other then Google that allow businesses to get some solid leads that help business grow.

There can be tons of ways where you can establish your authority to attract your targeted audience and bring leads and conversions to the business that includes, Peer to Peer interaction, community building and more…

Today, I am having no post lined up but, I have a man who according to me is the boldest mate in the search sphere I know! He probably is the first man who blocked Google bot from his own blog and the blog which used to appear on the first page first rank against the keyword “SEO 2.0″ is no more anywhere in search engine. He is none other than The SEO from Berlin, Germany Mr. Tad Chef.

Without any further delay, I will ask him questions about his latest act to block Google bot and other question that will allow all of us to know more about him.

Hello Tad, Hope you are doing great!

Question: Tad, let me start with the most demanding question first, Why did you block Google from your blog? What were the real reasons behind this? And should people follow you? [With regards you your latest act of blocking Google from the website]

Answer: First thank you very much for reaching out and interviewing me!

To be honest my blog is mainly private in nature despite dealing with business topics. That is I don’t earn money with it directly. It’s more of a resume so that potential clients see who I am and the level of my expertise.

So I can’t spend too much time on it as I have to work for clients in the first place. I may charge a small subscription fee in the future though so that I will be able to publish actionable advice more regularly.

I’ve been hit by Panda 2.5 at the end of Novemeber 2011. I didn’t have much time to fix that. I tried the common sense approaches like checking for duplicate content, outdated articles etc. but dealing with a Panda penalty (even though Google just calls it an update) is not as easy as that.

It’s a full time job for weeks or month sometimes. I just couldn’t invest that much time. Also I was really angry. I’m fed up with Google treating us webmasters like some kind of dictator.

They have to fix their algorithm. My site is NOT low quality. I’m one of the most renowned SEO bloggers worldwide. So apparently it was a false positive.

Also I was following too much of Google advice by then. I was writing boring Google-opzimized headlines and the likes. I wanted to be myself again and use metaphors, write like in the early days of my blog when Google didn’t rank me at all. It took them half a year or something to notice how popular my blog was.

In case you depend on the income of your site, don’t block Google. You have to buy ads while you are fixing your site. In case you can afford to start over without going bankrupt, you can block it and instead work on getting a real audience by cutting out the middleman. Make people visit your site directly!

Otherwise you just get more dependent on Google with each step of optimization. Also giving away all your content for free for Google to monetize is not a viable business model. That’s why publishers all over the world rebel against Google News.

Question: Google is getting smarter day by day and this has make life of some SEOs really difficult, so do you think the year 2013 is going to be the year of flushing down snake oil sellers?

Answer: I’m afraid tricksters and fraudsters will thrive as long as there is an entity like Google that hides it’s “secret sauce”. Black hat SEOs for example are very smart people and technologically savvy. Already I get spam emails offering me “content marketing” services. So these people are the first ones to adapt while legitimate webmasters and businesses can’t cope. So basically Google is throwing the baby out with the bathwater: it hurts legit sites while black hats don’t care with their automated throw away domains.

What I’ve seen from Panda and Penguin is that many small businesses have been hit and now have to buy Google ads to survive. Go figure. In 2013 Google will atemmpt to grab even bigger shares of luctrative markets. Also they want webmasters to replace SEO with PPC. You compete against Google. Google si not getting smarter, it’s getting more selfish each day. Everybody else loses, including search users who get ads above the fold instead of organic search results.

Question: Tad, there is no doubt that you are one hell of an amazing SEO, so I will try to ask this question like a student. Tell us the 3 tactics that you use to build really high quality links for yourself and your clients?

Answer:

To be honest I don’t really like tactics. Things like blogger outreach or infographics are good tactics. That’s what I can sell clients. I aim for the long term though. Also sometimes I do something and only later realize that it’s an amazing tactic I used. Trying to replicate that makes it a bit too artificial though and doesn’t work then.

One of such tactics that is not really a tactic but a genuine reaction to what I see. It’s telling young gifted people that they rock. When I notice promising newcomers to the SEO industry I try to welcome them. I do it at a time when most people ignore them. Later on when they are already more successful than myself they still remember me. For example one day you may become the Danny Sullivan of Pakistan given the amazing pace your career develops.

This wouldn’t work in case it would be just done to reap the benefits later. I really like seeing new people entering the industry and refreshing it with their brand new ideas and fervor. Others go after influencers and egobait them but these leaders are so busy they won’t even notice most of those who seek their attention.

Question: I think this is the great question that I should ask you as your blog is no more in the Google search Index… do you still got emails in which people requesting to guest post on your blog?

Answer: Yeah, I do. Right now I have a backlog of two unpublished guest posts. Sorry people, I’m doing what I can. I have to work and write myself too! Search Engine Journal links to me as a blog that allows guest blogging so I get those I think. Also my blog is noindex, follow – that is the links still work.

Proper guest blogging is not just about the links and Google juice though. It’s about the relationship etc. For example you have guest posted on SEO 2.0 and I still know who you are and like you. Also I know that you know what you do. Thus I was able to write a testimonial for you.

Question: How do you [see] SEO today and what will be its share after few years?

Answer: How do I see SEO now? I think there was a word missing in the question… SEO is moving fast. On the other hand many of the things I predicted or wanted back in 2007 when I started SEO 2.0 are mainstream now. I think the acronym SEO will fade. Maybe findability or something similar with a more holistic approach will replace it.

After all SEO is already not solely about search engines anymore. I’m afraid SEO in future will only mean the technical aspects of optimization for search. In the best case the industry will embrace the Search Experience Optimization definition and evolve enough to stay afloat under its current acronym.

Questions: Strictly SEO, Is social Media important? Why?

Answer: Even in case you want to focus on old school SEO that is link building without content generation all the time you need social media to get those links. Everything else is not scalable. Link building without social media is a tedious and inefficient process.

Question: Do you think that on-page SEO alone is powerful enough to cater long tail keywords in search engines? And what are the 3 most important on-page tactics when it comes to SEO?

Answer: Good question. The long tail is basically what’s left for most webmasters and businesses these days. Also it’s much better converting etc. On-page SEO the old school way may not suffice though. You can have an optimized structure, titles and copy but still not get much traffic.

IMHO tagging is one of the most underestimated and least mentioned onsite techniques. Large sites use it all the time. In the best case you use folksonomy that is the wisdom of crowds to tag your content. People know the terms they’d use in search and tag accordingly. When you look at Last FM for example the music is always perfectly tagged.

Another grand technique is the related content approach. Show thumbnails of similar content to your users and make the links crawlable. On WordPress it’s just about installing a plugin.

Add user comments. I often rank for queries where the only place the query gets mentioned is the user comment. There is also a trick how you can create more crawlable content with ease, create a new page for each comment.

Question: Tad, I am following you and your advice for quite a long time and that really helps me in shaping my career, what I really want from you today is to reveal some tips on time management when it comes to SEO.

Answer: Time management is really tough. I was chaotic for years but my health and my famly forced my the reorganize. So by now I am very strict when it comes to time. I plan my week in advance. I have 30 min and one hour slots. I use TeuxDeux for that.

I read my email once daily, in the afternoon and plan longer replies as extra tasks for the following days. Replying to email all the time is the biggest productivity killer these days. I almost never work on the weekend or at night anymore. I start my day with workout. I schedule social media times and research times. Usually I only use 30 min a day for social media. I assign extra time for the task of SMO, that is time spent on social media actively researching and sharing industry related resources.

Question: One thing you love and one think you hate about SEO?

Answer: I love how SEO encompasses all kinds of things. You can write for SEO, you can program for SEO, you can meet people for SEO, you name it.

I hate that SEO is still a dirty word and nobody seems to be able to change that.

Questions: How easy or difficult it is for you to tell your non industry friends [or children and parents] about what you do as a profession?

Answer: My family understood it pretty quickly. My friends too, I even worked with some of them. People I meet on the street, like aquintances are much more difficult. I often give up and just say that I’m an online journalist because that’s something they can grasp.

“Content is KING” is the most common yet famous phrase in the online marketing industry. Let’s not get in to the debate of its authenticity but no one can deny the fact that it is important in the digital world and everyone has to follow it.

No matter if you are a business, celebrity, or selling a product online, in order to please your targeted audience, you need good content and in case you are not creating valuable and engaging content, you are giving vaccinating your top seat to your competitors to win over you!

So, why one needs to generate quality content? What exactly is the purpose of it and does it really help convert visitors in to leads and customers? These are the basic questions that most businesses ask when SEOs and Inbound marketers tend to recommend content production to businesses all around the globe.

Here are few of the basic and important reasons why you should build content on regular basis.

Influences Customers Decision

Consumers on the internet are smart and aware; they don’t just go to a store and buy! Above given image is the common behaviour of today’s online customer. They know their needs then move towards evaluating the product and its alternatives before they actually decided to buy. Buying the product is not enough but one needs to enhance experience of their customer in order to keep them coming back and eventually increase their sales growth.

In the process defined above a business need a valuable and interesting content around the web so that customers can perform their research and finally decide! If you will only focus on selling the product, customers may not find you interesting and choose the alternative available.

The idea is to create compiling and interesting content around the brand which directly or indirectly influences customer’s decision.

Build Trust

Building trust is another reason why you should create valued content, not only on your website but around the web. People on the internet have an easy access to many other alternative of yours or in other words the competition is tough so you cannot be a magnet for your targeted audience just by attractive brochures and ads instead you need to gain their trust in order to attract and potentially sell your product online.

There is no perfect formula of earning trust online but if people find you everywhere active be it your website, as well as on different websites, blogs and forums, interviews or find you speaking at the public conference they will tend to trust you over a person/brand who is busy promoting its product or service instead of helping people and talking about the real problems and solutions of it.

Brand Building

There are tons and tons of businesses available online and there is not even a single day when a new business doesn’t open up its eye in the world of internet but sadly their survival rate is very low.

You might have come across many yourself so ask yourself, how many of them did you really find promising? How many of them really left a great impression on you. I am certain that not many would have earned your trust and this small number is actually able to turn their business into a brand.

Brand building is important as without it you might not be able to continue to exist in the longer run. In order to build a brand you need to continuously work on producing content that attracts your targeted audience and allow them to engage with you.

Ideally, a business should focus on high quality content development for industry news papers and magazines. Focusing on interviews, data, infographic and surveys can help your business transform into a brand easily.

Improve Sales

One of the simple, important and core reason for any business to develop context or work on providing an engaging data is to increase and improve your sales ratio or else there is no use of building, trust, brand or understanding the user behavior.

In order to improve sales, a business should have to build content that is compiling enough to encourage user to convert. The content that usually convert includes case studies, testimonials, reviews and similar.

Creative content is a sure WIN these days and above all it is loveable by consumers as well as search engines. If you are one of those businesses who are not investing in content and is rather busy in promoting your services and products. Then you should focus on compiling appealing and engaging content in order to live in the market for a longer period of time!

What is your excuse for building content for your business?
